Donna Rogers: Welcome to Colstrip. I have lived in Colstrip 29 years, Wow! Where did the time go? I did most of my growing up between Bozeman and Livingston,on the Livingston side of the Bozeman Pass. I attended a lovely one room country school up Jackson Creek (Malmbourg School)and graduated High School in Livingston. I moved to Colstrip soon after. My husband Rex works for PP&L. He is a Lead Plant Operator and IBEW Union Steward. We have 3 wonderful kids.
I enjoy outdoor activities, my animals, cooking, gardening and spending time with friends and family. I have been selling real estate since 2004 and thoroughly love my job. I enjoy meeting new people and introducing them to Colstrip, South Eastern Montana and everything that is offered in this beautiful country I call home.

Sue Neiman:

Hi! I’m Sue Neiman, Broker Owner of Neiman Realty. Let me introduce myself!

My family arrived on the Rosebud Creek south of Colstrip in the late 1800’s (shortly after Custer met his demise). The family was always interested in real estate...if you call a dirt topped log cabin surrounded by sagebrush and more dirt real estate!
I was raised on Rosebud Creek on a wheat and cattle farm and lived in the home my grandfather built for my grandmother in 1915.

I attended school in Colstrip beginning in 1965. At that time grades 1 through 12 were housed in the original brick building that is now Frank Brattin Middle School. Before I started 2nd grade, the mine expanded, and Colstrip experienced a “boom”. The influx of people resulted in building an addition onto the school. While it was being built, students were displaced to classrooms around the community. That year I attended 2nd grade in the basement of the United Community Church, and my sister attended 4th grade in the old Mess Hall(now Helyers Video Store). Colstrip “boomed” several times by the time I graduated from high school in 1977.

The ‘booms’ brought many interesting people to town, and with the people came a shortage of housing. During the 70’s and 80’s houses were built, and modular homes were brought in like mad. The majority of people lived in mobile homes. Our population topped out at approximately 10,000! What a wild and crazy time!

I attended college at Montana State University in Bozeman and earned a degree in elementary education. I returned to Colstrip to teach 2nd grade for 2 years. Our schools were crowded with children of the people who were building plants 3 & 4. People were coming and going all of the time. Colstrip was bustling!

A tremendous event occurs every spring in southeastern Montana—the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale. It was at this event in 1982 that I met my husband-to-be. He was a farm boy from western Montana and was working in Colstrip as a scheduling engineer for Bechtel Corp.(company contracted to build the plants). We were married in 1983 out at the farm on Rosebud Creek.

In 1984, we left Colstrip and moved to a family farm near Willard, MT. (That’s right, Willard!) An old abandoned farmhouse built in 1920 stood on the property, and after a tremendous amount of renovation, it became our home. My husband operated the farm, and I taught 5th grade in Ekalaka for 4 years. We lived there for 13 years. It was a wonderful time in our lives.

By 1997, my dad was ready to have some help on his farm on Rosebud Creek, so we returned to Colstrip. Like everyone else who moves to Colstrip, we lived in an apartment for 1 year. (I think this is a rule!) Desperate to live in our own home, we bought a fixer-upper and fixed it up!

Throughout the years we have re-modeled 7 homes! I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out I wanted to be a realtor. I had to try day care—had some great kids for 2 years. Then I became executive director for the Schoolhouse History and Art Center—loved that job for 2 years! In January of 2006 I became a realtor. I have finally found my calling! I truly enjoy helping people through the process of selling their homes, and I love meeting the new people we have joining our community.
